Born in Shiraz, Iran, Somayeh Gholami began her artistic journey with a deep passion for Persian calligraphy. Though she earned a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Coimbra in 2013, her artistic path stayed strong.

Her commitment to calligraphy remained unwavering throughout her academic and creative development. She holds a master’s degree in Naskh and Ketabat calligraphy from the Society of Iranian Calligraphers, completed in 2006.

Somayeh blends form, color, and texture to express intricate ideas through her refined calligraphic techniques. Her work explores traditional Kufic calligraphy, reimagining letters as abstract forms of visual and conceptual expression.

She uses this transformation to explore identity through the symbolic weight of words and shapes. Each composition reflects the essence of individuality, drawn from both language and inner experience.

Somayeh's art investigates the relationship between genetics and lived experience in shaping personal identity. She highlights how DNA and life paths intertwine to create unique physical and behavioral traits. These layered insights craft portraits of individuality within each carefully composed piece.

Her expertise in calligraphy has led to workshops, talks, and numerous exhibitions, both solo and group. Notable displays include Seyhoun Art Gallery in Tehran and the Aga Khan Center in Lisbon.

In her recent series, Blueprint of Our Existence, she deepens her investigation of personal uniqueness. The collection uses a variety of letter structures to suggest individual complexity and emotional range. Each work reflects possibilities and limitations that shape human expression and identity.

Through her calligraphy, Somayeh captures the uniqueness of individuals using timeless forms in a contemporary voice. Her work bridges tradition and modernity, celebrating identity through rhythm, structure, and visual language.
